Review by Nellie Crawford

My thoughts on Antigone, written and directed by Jane Hille;

A week ago I would have said Greek tragedies weren’t my thing, but after seeing Antigone, I’ve changed my mind. Admittedly, I did my homework and googled the whole sorry saga of Oedipus and his family before we went, but it didn’t prepare me for the emotional impact of this play.

The anguish portrayed by these young actors is visceral, and their emotions are raw and authentic. Not once during the play did I think they were anything but experienced professionals - a combination of natural talent and inspired directing.

Jane Hille has taken a 2500 year old story about dysfunctional families, injustice, duty and defiance and reinterpreted it to make it mesmerising and contemporary. Antigone is a tragedy, and I expected to be overwhelmed. Which I was, but talking to others in the audience after the play, we all agreed that this latest play of Jane’s was an uplifting experience.

I’m looking forward to her next one....

The Chookhouse is one of the best Fringe events we’ve seen, and we’ve been going for a few years now. Our congratulations to Jane - a very professional and polished play.

I don’t know if you’re interested in our thoughts, but I’m going to give them anyway..

It’s been nicely honed since our first readings, but the theme of women’s solidarity (or lack of it) still shines through. We heard several “that was good” type comments as we left, so other people must have felt the same way.

Bob, who had no expectations, (just dragged along) really enjoyed it. He liked all the characters and reckons he’s met women just like that when he worked in factories in Sheffield. (I guess things never change, and maybe it’s not just country women) He picked up on the theme straight away - and he must have been paying attention all through because he laughed at Poppy’s “hatched” comment. Great ending, by the way.

Now, as for the laughter, I saw it as a witty, fast-paced social commentary, not so much a rolling in the aisles comedy, so I found myself smiling and nodding rather than laughing out loud. Bob’s comment was that when he wanted to laugh he had to hold back because the repartee was so quick he’d miss the next bit of dialogue.

The song certainly added something to the play. I’m amazed that the actors sounded like they could all sing, as well as act, and the choreography for that and for all the box handling - in fact all the moving around, was perfect. All in all I thought the actors were well cast and brought out the different personalities of the women - good performances.

Is Jane going to take this one further? Has she got another one hatching? Can’t wait for the next exciting developments...

Thank Jane for the opportunity to participate. I think I know how she feels - it’s a bit like the opening night of an exhibition, but at least an exhibition is only one night!

I personally would like to thank Swan Christian College, Jane Hille (Artistic Director), Fenceline Theatre Company, Evelyn Tan (Photography) and the cast and crew for all their efforts in bringing the ANYMAN play and the story of addiction to life. It is exciting to see the positive impact that this play has had and will have in the lives of so many people and i honor them for being a part of it, without them it would not have been possible.

Jane is a fantastic director and producer. She works equally well with children and adults of all ages, casts of 1 to hundreds. Jane’s works are always 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟.

Watching Jane Hille Productions ANYMAN - THE STORY OF ADDICTION was moving. I’m generally not easily moved but shed more than a tear during this gripping stage play. Jane managed to write a brilliant play, capturing the essence of ‘addiction’ through her masterful direction. Taking a cast of ‘lay people’ to a professional award winning performance is no mean feat, and takes a lot of skillful direction.

The play was rightfully awarded the coveted Fringe World Theatre Award 2018 which is given to the best show in each category. This awared is testament to this outstanding piece of work ‘ANYMAN’ written and directed by the very talented Jane Hille.

But this wasn’t the first play of Jane’s I saw. I was lucky enough to see “1914 Our Story About Love” and “1915 Under the Surface” plays she wrote and directed as part of the Anzac Albany Centenary. Her writing and direction captured the essence of war, family and heartbreak - not easy to do on stage, but she managed it skillfully. Brilliant pieces of work.

Thanks Jane for creating masterpiece after masterpiece 👏❤️ I am SO looking forward to The Chook House showing at the State Theatre Centre of WA next year in January!!!

I had the indelible experience of being in the cast of Jane’s award-winning production of ANYMAN - THE STORY OF ADDICTION, a powerful and moving presentational theatre piece she wrote for the 2018 Perth Fringe Festival. Jane’s skill at knitting together such a large, overwhelmingly amateur cast, to evoke such authentic acting from each cast member and the ensemble, over a dozen performances, was rewarded by stellar reviews and a packed house every night, with audiences brought to tears and the cast following suit at the standing ovations received after each and every performance.

Thanks, Jane! 🌹🌹🌹
